Music

"The language of music is common to all generations and nations; it is understood by everybody, since it is understood with the heart."

Loreto College has a long tradition of musical talent across a range of styles and genres. Outside of Music as a curricular subject, students can partake in some of the many extra-curricular music groups on offer, such as the school's Trad Group and Orchestra.

Instrumental Lessons

Lessons are offered during class time in voice, cello, guitar, piano and violin by professional and certified musicians.  They are prepared and entered for examinations (e.g. R.I.A.M). Their pieces can also be used for the practical element of the Junior Cycle & Leaving Cert Exams.

Music Generation is an additional option where students can learn a variety of instruments in group setting for a very nominal fee.

 The Orchestra

The Orchestra is a dedicated group of musicians who rehearse every Wednesday  at lunchtime.  There is a huge variety of instruments from clarinets to violins who all blend together to produce a gorgeous harmonious sound!  The orchestra performs at many school events and you may have even caught a glimpse of them during our open evenings and school events!

The Irish Trad Group

The trad group have been playing together for many years and are often called upon to perform at school events. The girls play a variety of instruments such as uilleann pipes, accordion, fiddle, whistle, flute, bodhrán, harp, guitar etc.  The group meets on a Tuesday at lunchtime and welcome new players of all abilities

Music Club

The music club takes place on a Monday at lunchtime and caters for all students.  It is inclusive and focuses on promoting student wellbeing through music. Students play music games and perform a variety of songs using boom whackers and ukulele.

Ukulele Club

Every Thursday there is a fun Ukulele club for players of all levels. It is open to all students and staff and is a wonderful way of learning a new instrument and have some fun!

Choir

All students take choir from 1st to 3rd Year as part of wellbeing.  Students will sing, play ukulele, play boom whackers and learn songs to improve their wellbeing through music. Students can choose to continue choir in 5th & 6th Year. They will learn pieces ranging from hymns to pop songs and all choirs perform their pieces in harmony. Music students may use the songs learned in choir for group singing at their Junior Cert practical.

Cór an Chroí is the school competition choir. The choir comprises members from all year groups and rehearses once a week. Auditions are held each term for the choir.
